How We Work

How a piece gets made

01

Inquiry & Consultation

Every project begins with a conversation. Send us a photo of the original piece, a sketch, or just a description of what you need.

02

Planning & Material Selection

Once we understand the project, we create detailed plans and source the appropriate wood.

03

Turning

The actual turning happens on our full-size lathe. We work carefully and methodically.

04

Finishing & Delivery

Each piece is sanded and prepared for finishing. We deliver pieces ready for your painter or finisher.

The Craft

Why turning matters

A wood lathe is the oldest and most precise tool for creating cylindrical and symmetrical forms in wood. It works by rotating the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool, allowing the craftsman to shape everything from delicate spindles to massive architectural columns with the same fundamental motion. Our lathe has the capacity to handle work that simply cannot be done any other way — turning a 14-inch diameter porch column requires a machine built for that scale, and the skill to match it.

For historic replication work, there is no substitute. CNC routers can approximate turned profiles, but they cannot replicate the subtle tool marks, slight variations, and organic character that define hand-turned work — the qualities that make a reproduction look genuinely period-appropriate rather than mass-produced. That combination of equipment and craftsmanship is what brings clients to us from across the country.
